Dwarka School Cycling League to kick off on August 31
-Aims to promote pollution free environment and Cycling culture in Dwarka
- Also aims to hunt talent for Cycling Federation of India
New Delhi: In a bid to spread the net wide to identify and nurture cycling talent in the country, the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) is all set to kick start the Avon Cycles School League starting with the Dwarka chapter on August 31, 2014.
The first of its kind, the League format will initiate with a race in three age categories (U-13, U-16, U-18) and is expected to see participation of close to 1000 students from the 60 odd schools in Dwarka area of the national capital. The race will kick off from St Mary’s School, Dwarka (Sector-19).
Explaining the concept behind the league, CFI secretary Onkar Singh said, “The driving force behind the Avon Cycles Dwarka School Cycling League is to reach out to maximum students and encourage them to take up cycling. This will also serve as a talent scouting program for our 2020 Olympics preparation.”
The organisers of the event, Artsmith Concepts & Visions picked Dwarka as the location for their maiden project as the area has close to 60 schools, hundreds of residential societies there by giving a right mix of encouragement for students and parents. And most importantly wide roads only make it more apt for kids to cycle and promote pollution free environment.
Dwarka School Cycling League intends to work along with the schools, identify talents and train them for future races. St Mary’s School, Dwarka is the school partner for this maiden race. The school supports and promotes green initiatives in the school and community at large. In fact, Ms. Sheelu Mathew, the Principal is herself a cycling enthusiast and cycles more than 35 kms everyday to come to school from Uday Park, Delhi.
“Our objective is to encourage the students to take up the green cause and become aware and take responsibility towards environment. Cycling is the best bet to give this concept a holistic approach and that is precisely the reason why we have associated with the Dwarka School Cycling League,” added Sheelu Mathew, Principal, St Mary’s School, Dwarka.
A registration fee of 300/- is being taken for the race of the students and a goodie bag consisting of T-shirt, safety helmet, food, water and juice will be given to the participants. Though it is a first time initiative but sponsors have been upbit about the league. Avon Cycles is the Title sponsor for the League.

We have been supporting Greenathon’s across the country with the same objective and this event provides us an opportunity to reach out to students in a more focused manner.”
Dwarka Cycling League will also have a fun-ride for the Parents, Teachers, Cycling enthusiasts and Children with Special Needs from across the City are expected to join and promote the Go Green aspect of the race.
All students participating in the race will be given Participation certificates from Cycling Federation of India.
